If it's the land of the free why is marijuana illegal?

If it was the land of the free why do we have certain laws in place. I can understand murder, if you take away another's freedom you should have your own taken. Marijuana does not take anyone's freedom, if you grow it and sell it that's your own capitalist business. Why is that illegalized along with a few other laws, like trespassing or having a loud party?
